"There's Music in the Air" at Moravian Village
Click on images to enlargeBethlehem, PA. has a rich choral history of church, college, and community groups crowned by the renowned Bach Choir. A relative new corner is the Moravian Village Singers composed of residents of the continuing care community.
Moravian Village was opened fully by December 2004 and by the following fall had a chorus of 35-40 members. Shirley Moser, an experienced church and choral conductor invited all interested residents to an evening sing-along. From that humble beginning the Village Singers was formed.
There are a handful of soloists and barber shoppers. Many members have a church or college choir experience. All have a love of singing, overcoming afflictions of forgetfulness, poor vision and hearing.
There is excitement and joy in abundance as the concerts begin with the chorus entering to "When the Saints Come Marching In". It continues with Shirley Moser’s showmanship skills presenting a costumed Santa, a Dolly, or even a Snowball to the appropriate music. Balloons with smiley faces rise from the chorus as they sing "Put on a Happy Face".
The first concert was at Christmas 2005. Since then there have been three or four concerts a year, each with a theme patriotic, St. Patrick's Day, Valentine's day etc.
The Village Singers also take their act on the road to a local community college and another continuing care facility. The chorus theme song is "There's Music in the Air"
The chorus has a “standing room only” crowd at each concert, and even attracts eight or ten "Senior Groupies" who listen attentively to each weekly rehearsal. The Village Singers continue to be the most popular of a wide range of activities both for participants and for listening residents and new members are always welcome.
